Canadian Wireless New Entrants
Good Morning Everyone!
Hope you've all been out enjoying the weather for this long weekend. There is still a lot to be done before the end of the long weekend. If you're not at the cottage, or away from home, be sure to enjoy what's left of the long weekend wherever you are.
This time around, I wanted to discuss the new wireless entrants that have specifically launch in Toronto and a few other cities across the country. These companies are working to expand nationwide over the next few years. All of you should be aware of the major three current wireless companies; Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Of those three major companies, they each have sub-companies Fido, Solo/Virgin, and Koodo respectively. For those of you who don't know, we have two companies completely launched in Toronto, and one on it's way in about three days. Those companies would be Wind Mobile, Mobilicity, and Public Mobile. All of these new companies are offering a flat-rate "unlimited" plan of sorts. The downside of these companies right now is their coverage areas, and network reliability. I'm sure they will improve over time.
Wind Mobile launched in mid-December of 2009. Wind Mobile is actually part of the Globalive family which is the company that brings Canadians Yak calling services. The big thing behind Wind, and what had Wind in the news a lot since last summer was their "foreign ownership". After some review, there was news swirling that Orascom which is an Egyptian based corporation had 60% ownership of Wind Mobile. This foreign investment to me is what helped Wind launch out ahead of the other new entrants. The whole Wind/Orascom speculations can go on for a long time. The point is, they're out now, and Canadians have another option for wireless service. You can find Wind Mobile store locations around Toronto, and soon in Blockbuster Stores around the city. I don't think that Wind is allowing for private dealer applications at this point.
Mobilicity is what entrant DAVE Wireless decided to name their brand. Mobilicity launched last Saturday. This brand seems to be focusing on their simple plans like Wind, as well as an Asian demographic with their "Unlimited East/South Asia Long Distance" add-ons. Mobilicity is actually allowing for private dealer applications at this time.
Public Mobile is the last of the three new entrants. There ads have been up in bus shelters, and various places in Toronto for the last few months. They should be launching in the next few days. They again are focusing on a simple flat-rate unlimited plan. You may have noticed their $40 unlimited plan posters/billboards around Toronto. Public Mobile is also allowing for private dealers, and you can submit a request through their "distribution opportunities" section on their website. I have already seen some Public Mobile stores under construction around the city.
I hope that all of these companies are able to survive the battle against the other large companies, and don't get bought out. This competition can be good for us (the consumer) in the long run. We'll have to wait and see how things go. Some of our phone bills won't be so ridiculous in the coming years.
Again, please enjoy what's left of your long weekend. If you're doing the fireworks thing today, or tomorrow, be safe with that.
Much Love!!!
